This mountain pitcher plant, S.
oreophila, exhibits great resemblance to some of its southeastern
cousins. Indeed, the species was considered to be a form of S.
flava until it was formally described by E. T. Wherry in 1973.
The plant is restricted to several scattered locations in northern
Alabama, and is considered endangered. I am indebted to Mrs.
Mildred Y. Linder of Birmingham, Alabama, then with Southern Research
Institute, for my first and only
sighting of the natural habitat of this rare species. |
