Dynamic-Area AF       Back to Nikon D300 Menu Hierarchy
by Makoto Honda     February 5, 2008

There are three AF area modes supported by D300 auto-focus system. This is selected by the AF mode selector lever on the back of the camera:

Single-point AF In this mode, only the currently set, single focus point is used.
Dynamic-area AF This mode is activated only if Continuous-AF (set by camera front lever) is selected. In this mode, when the focused subject gets out of the currently selected focus point, the AF system uses information gleaned from the neighboring focus points. The Dynamic AF area option below allows you to specify how many focus points should participate in this AF decision-making.
Auto-area AF In this mode, the closest subject will be focused based on all 51 focus points.

* If Single-AF is chosen, the operation is the same as Single-point AF above.

51 points The 50 points surrounding the current focus point participate in AF decision-making. Use this if the subject is moving really violently.

3D-tracking
In this mode, AF system attempts to keep the focused subject in focus by tracking the subject's motion and dynamically changing the focus point accordingly. Useful to shoot a fast-moving tennis player, for instance.
