This underwater photography
has captured a local ant being drowned in the deadly pool of S. purpurea
pitcher. The surface tension of the pitcher
fluid is measured to be considerably lower than that of water. This
promotes swift drowning of the insect prey by acting as wetting agent on
the otherwise water-resistant insect body.
